Making your wardrobe more sustainable seems like a big task to undertake, and you may not even know where to start. But it’s much easier than you think.

One cannot talk about corsetry without mentioning legendary corsetier Mr Pearl. Committed to his craft to the point of wearing a corset 24/7 in order to achieve a 18-inch waist, Pearl is one of most iconic and extreme corsetiers in today's world, even creating corsets for designers Thierry Muger, Alexander McQueen and performer Dita von Teese.

Whilst their fashion was respectable, their smart dressing made them more intimidating rather than mature. Full of middle-class rebellious teenagers, Teddy Girls were essentially a well-dressed middle finger towards the austere upper classes of their post-war world. Forming gangs and becoming important figures in the media, Teddy Girls are one of the first British female youth subcultures to exist, and one of the most forgotten.

I wasn't aware of why I suddenly liked Dior's latest men's collections, until I found out that Kim Jones became the new artistic director for Dior Men, as of March 19, 2018. The introduction of a new artistic director for a luxury fashion house can be the make or break for its future. And in my opinion, the decision to choose Kim Jones for Dior Men is one of the best made for the Dior brand.

Released in 1991, Paris is Burning is a documentary that presents the lives of those in the Harlem drag ball scene in the late 80s. Documenting the meeting point between urban poverty, queer identity and the marginalised black and latino community, Paris is Burning is a perfect example of how marginalised communities find success, love, family and confidence not in typical society, but in each other.

Taking place in Vienna's City Hall, The Life Ball is the biggest charity event in Europe raising money for people with HIV or AIDS. Founded by Gery Keszler's organisation AIDS LIFE in 1993,  the 26th Life Ball just happened, taking place on the 8th of June, 2019. Not only known for its fundraising efforts, The Life Ball is also known for being home to some of the most extravagant red carpet outfits.

Created by the Wachowski siblings in 1999, The Matrix is a cult sci-fi blockbuster. Inspired by Hong Kong action films and known for its plot twists and intensely choreographed fight sequences, The Matrix still holds up in todays world. Fusing together gothic and cyberpunk silhouettes with the streamlined aesthetic of futuristic technology, The Matrix singlehandedly created an aesthetic that is both incredibly unique and timeless.

No designer blends haute couture fashion, technology and art better than Iris van Herpen. Brought to life, van Herpen's creations bend and break the rules of what haute couture fashion is. 3D-printed dresses made to look like exoskeletons, fabric flowing in mystical ways, laser cut fabric transforming the human form, bodices turning into second skins; Iris van Herpen is a designer to fall in love with.

With an instantly recognisable aesthetic style, the works of filmmaker Wes Anderson are more than just films. Using striking and harmonious colour palettes, Anderson uses colour to convey social structures, character development and the role of relationships. 

Prince was always a pioneer; pioneering the 'Minneapolis Sound", a mix of funk, rock, pop, synth and new wave, as well as pioneering an unrestricted form of men's fashion. Experimenting with 'post-fashion'; post gender, post human and post race; Prince created a style that forever transformed the world of men's fashion.

The annual Met Gala is essentially the Super Bowl of the fashion industry. Only the best celebrities are invited to extravagantly dress up according to a theme that changes every year. The fashion is definitely over-the-top and for the fashion-lover that I am, the Met Gala is one of my favourite events of the entire year.

Founding the high-end streetwear brand Undercover while still studying at Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo, Takahashi's first boutique, 'Nowehere' opened in Ura-Harajuku in 1993. Showing his first collection at Japan Fashion Week just a year later in 1994, it was clear that Undercover was a brand to keep an eye on.

Wanting to rebel against ‘common’ ways of thought, the poor British youth were completely helpless in their fight to change reality. Therefore, the only way to initiate change in society was to “transform themselves into directly offensive and threatening beings.” But what was punk all about and how did it reach the runway?

Harris Glenn Milstead; perhaps better known by his drag/stage name; Divine, was an American drag queen, singer and actor. Becoming a cult LGBT+ icon in the past 20 years, Divine; and her roles in iconic John Waters films; has become widely renowned for her gorgeously grotesque, over-the-top and rule-breaking performances.

Glasgow-born and now London-based club kid Charles Jeffrey is an emerging fashion designer you should know about. His experience; studying at Central Saint Martins, interning at Christian Dior and hosting a weekly club night at the Vogue Fabrics Dalston club; is incredibly apparent in his work for his brand 'Loverboy'.

Between 1982 and 1987, the power suit took the focus off a woman’s gender and on to what she could achieve; a ‘uniform’ to demand respect, authority and power in a corporate setting. The power suit is now considered synonymous with feminism, equality and the breaking of gender roles. 

From a fashion influence point of view, Blade Runner has become a major inspiration for neo-noir/cyberpunk looks and garments. Two of my favourite collections; McQueen's Givenchy Fall 1998 Couture Collection and Gareth Pugh's Fall 2016 Ready-to-Wear Collection; references neo-noir fashion and the character Rachael. The 1940s silhouette, use of latex and leather-look fabric, opulent fur and structured 1980s shoulders create vibes of a powerful and futuristic femme fatale.

It's not always known, but the link between gender and fashion hasn’t always existed. It's only been around for about 400 years. Even the concept of dressing baby girls in pink and baby boys in blue, a concept so widely known and overused today, originated in the 1940s by marketers and advertisers. So how did this link start?
