Here’s just a few of the new and upcoming artists featured in this month’s Perspex Beats:

  1. Wallows

Full of indie-rock and post-punk influences, Wallows’ debut album Nothing Happens is full of tender feelings, whether its feeling insecure or falling out of love in a world that just can’t seem to communicate anymore. Emotional vocals paired with fuzzy guitar riffs and simple basslines, Wallows is definitely a band to keep your eye on in 2019. And one more thing, Dylan Minnette (Clay Jensen from 13 Reasons Why) is one-third of this upcoming indie band. Recommended listening: Are You Bored Yet? and Scrawny.

  2. Micky James

Inspired by The Strokes, Led Zeppelin and David Bowie, Micky James is known for his incorporation of 70s glam rock with a contemporary pop twist. Previously the frontman for the alternative rock band The Karma Killers, James has now gone solo, releasing 5 songs since early 2018. Full of intensity and energy, each EP is a rock anthem in its own way. Embracing 60s and 70s glam rock both in his music and his fashion, Micky James is an artist to keep your eye on in more ways than one. Recommended listening: Give It To Me Straight and New Heart.

  3. Two Door Cinema Club

Now I know Two Door Cinema Club are definitely not new or upcoming, but they’ve recently released a new album; False Alarm. Diverging from their traditional sound for their fourth album, False Alarm is full of experimental indie-pop tunes and 70s disco inspired beats. Two Door Cinema Club is one of my favourite bands, and I loved their 80s synth-pop divergence in their third album; Gameshow, as well as their original material. Recommended listening: Already Gone, So Many People and Dirty Air.

  4. Men I Trust

Based in Montreal, Men I Trust is not a band to be confined by just one label. Releasing songs referencing dream-pop, indie, electro-pop and funk, Men I Trust is incredibly focused on staying independent and creating whatever they want. Regardless of their small growth, they were endorsed by apparent dream-pop fan; Tyler, The Creator in late 2018. Full of dreamy female vocals and funk-inspired basslines, you’re bound to find something to groove along to with Men I Trust. Recommended listening: Morse Code and Lauren.

  5. half•alive

What I love about half•alive, is their ability to transform the feeling inner turmoil into infectious indie-pop singles; ranging from feeling unable to move on with your life, to the feeling of not achieving as much as you’d hoped. Adding 70s funk into their indie tunes, their songs are endlessly catchy and also accompanied by incredibly aesthetically unique and intensely choreographed music videos. Recommended listening: still feel. and arrow.
